Big Three auto pact likely after new year

UAW president Woodcock indicated full settlements with General Motors Ford and Chrysler may occur after New Year's Day as ratification proceeds. GM council approved the tentative four to one pact with a 60 day strike threat looming for GM workers and a November 20 ballot deadline. The tentative deal includes wage increases about 51 cents an hour first year, retiree formula changes, and a 30-and-out retirement plan with quarterly adjustments beginning December 6, 1971.

Two climbers stranded on El Capitan await rescue

Two veteran climbers Warren Harding and Dean Caldwell hang 2000 feet above Yosemite Valley as 19 expert rescuers fly in for a dangerous operation. Harding, who led a 1988 ascent of El Capitan, asks to be left on the wall while Caldwell assists with gear and boltholes amid icy conditions and dwindling rations.

Ky to Visit US Bases and Johnson During Trip

South Vietnamese Vice President Nguyen Cao Ky will tour several U.S. military bases and meet former President Lyndon B. Johnson during a two and a half week informal visit. State Department has not released a full schedule, citing concern over potential antiwar demonstrations.

St Jude's researchers report a drug and radiation regimen yielding a five year remission rate of 17 percent in acute lymphocytic leukemia. They note risks and side effects, with several children remaining disease free for five years, and say publication in JAMA and Cancer Science is pending.

Viet traps and attack kill nine Americans in Vietnam

In Quang Ngai Province a 242-ton Americal Division truck was struck by a mine causing six deaths and four injuries. Two further American troops were killed and two wounded in another booby trap incident as U.S. combat losses rose with nine Americans dead and twelve wounded in a single day, the largest since earlier in the year.

Elyria to get federal funds for 1971 planning

Elyria will receive 95000 dollars in 1971 for planning work on the 1.2 million Malcolm Manor project and 1.6 million Fuller Road redevelopment. Norm H. Failing, director of community development, told city council last night that about 58000 dollars funds personnel and admin offices. HUD approved three extra positions, including a relocation manager fully federally funded, a rehabilitation manager split federal and city, and a deputy inspector funded by the city. Failing will seek final status before filling positions.

Reichlin urges Cascade Park transfer to county

Mayor Leonard P. Reichlin says he will ask Elyria City Council to transfer Cascade Park to Lorain County Metropolitan Park system or sell it under conditions. He plans to formalize the proposal in a letter to the council and send it to the Elyria Parks and Recreation Board. He notes county residents use the park and suggests reallocating funds to neighborhood parks if donated and the park improved.

Oberlin man dies in Rt 10 crash with tractor trailer

Robert Turek 46 of 204 Elm St died at the scene after his eastbound car left Rt 10 west of the Black River Bridge and was struck by Kenneth Ickes 40 of North Canton in a westbound tractor-trailer rig owned by Motor Freight Express. Ickes was uninjured. Turek, an FAA air traffic control specialist, was en route to Cleveland Hopkins Airport when the crash occurred around 7:10 am.
