Keys edges Bowman in Elyria mayoral race by 62 votes

Democrat Michael Keys, 31, won a razor-thin 62 vote margin over incumbent Marguerite Bowman to become Elyria's mayor on January 1. An automatic recount is planned though officials expect no change, with Keys acknowledging no clear mandate and Bowman party supporters describing the celebration as a wake.

Ohio voters defeat bottle tax and ban on pull-tabs

Ohio voters rejected State Issue 1 by 72 percent, voting 668,710 yes and 1,761,220 no. The defeat blocks a 10-cent bottle bounty and a ban on pull-tab openers, shifting focus to House Bill 36 a 0.3 percent tax plan to fund government cleanup programs.

Lorain County ballot results show mixed levy outcomes

Voters approved five of fifteen money measures with municipal expense levies passing in Avon Kipton and LaGrange and a Wellington fire district levy and Columbia Township road upgrades. Police levies failed in Avon Rochester and a sheriff’s bond issues in Firelands North Ridgeville and Sheffield Lake also fell short.

Two Olmsted Teens Die In One Car Crash On McKenzie Road

A one car crash on McKenzie Road Tuesday night killed two Olmsted Township teens, with Daniel Garrity of Nort Olmsted among the deceased. North Olmsted police, fire fighters, and wrecking crews responded as medics treated the injured victim at the scene. Further details appear on Page B-2.

Lorain County levy for sheriff's dept rejected in vote

Voters Tuesday defeated a 2 mill five year levy for Lorain County Sheriff’s Department by 56 to 44 percent, totaling 33 078 in favor to 28 089 against. Elyria passed it narrowly, while townships and villages supported, and countywide the levy failed 54 to 46. Absentee ballots showed similar divisions.
