Mass jail break leaves trooper dead in West Virginia
A group of fifteen teenage inmates escaped from the West Virginia Penitentiary after an armed guard was overpowered. One escapee was found dead near Moundsville, seven were captured, and an off duty trooper Philip Kesner was shot and killed as his car was seized. A second inmate in the car was found dead in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, with police unsure who killed him. The fugitives, armed and dangerous, spurred a massive cross-state manhunt involving Ohio and Pennsylvania authorities.

Wreckage of ex Elyrians plane found in North Carolina
Wreckage of a plane identified as belonging to Mr and Mrs R H Williamson missing since July 8 was found about 10 miles from their destination in southern North Carolina by a private pilot Billy Lamb. Bodies were in the wreck, found upside down near North Carolina highway 106 two miles west of Highlands. FAA expected to arrive at noon to begin cutting operations. The Williamsons left Clearwater Florida en route to Sylva North Carolina and Elyria.
