The United States detonated a five megaton underground nuclear device on Amchitka Island with no detected radiation or tidal waves. AEC officials said the test went off on schedule and produced minimal ground motion, while aftershocks near ground zero numbered 21 by 25 minutes after detonation.

Mariner 9 Ready to Orbit Mars After 248-Mile Journey

Artist concept shows Mariner 9 approaching Mars on November 13 to capture television images and map 70 percent of the planet. The mission will study surface temperature atmosphere and pressure. Ohio Snow Flurries Briefly Hit Big Cities
