Reagan wins Ohio and national landslide in 1980 election

Reagan carries Ohio with 52 percent of the vote, taking 25 electoral votes and boosting GOP gains. In Lorain County he defeats Carter 50,959 to 40,970. Carter leads in Lorain and Oberlin but Reagan wins most industrial areas. Nationwide Reagan wins at least 43 states, reversing Senate control and ending Democratic strongholds. Carter may run again in 1984.

Elyria voters reject half percent income tax hike

Elyria residents vetoed a proposed 0.5 percent income tax by about 12 130 to 4 749, saying it would close a 3 million deficit in the 1981 budget. Mayor Keys warned of further layoffs and service cuts with no new revenue, and hinted at a possible early 1981 special election to readdress the tax.

White makes dazzling debut in Lorain County race

Gregory A. White, Republican, won a tight Lorain County prosecutor contest over Daniel Stringer with 47,788 to 45,506. White, 39, a political newcomer, becomes the first Republican in the post since 1948 and benefited from a heated primary and local housing-related indictments affecting some Democratic supporters.

Bowman Upsets Bara For Ohio House Seat In 4th District

Bowman 62 edged incumbent Democrat John V. Bara by 1 171 votes among 42 335 ballots in Lorain County according to the county board of elections.
