Refinement urged after Lorain County tally night

Election officials voiced need for procedure refinements after tallying Lorain County results. Elections Director Jack Wolf cited 16 years as deputy and first-time duties as director in a national election. Absentee ballots included about 4 000 voters totaling 12 000 ballots and caused delays. Recount requests would follow the official tally within 10 days.

City workers call in sick over tax defeat in Elyria

About 111 of 150 employees in Elyria’s AFSCME Local 277 called in sick to protest the defeat of a 0.5 percent income tax and looming layoffs. Mayor Keys noted sanitation and several city departments were affected, with garbage pickups delayed. Union leader Wojdyla said members were upset by tax failure and slow contract talks begun last July.

Board hits Clinic again in Drug Dispensing Case

State Board of Pharmacy files a second two count citation against Doctors Clinic in Columbus alleging excessive sale of narcotics barbiturates and amphetamines to undercover agents between February 26 and July 15 1980. Clinic director Dr Leonard Faymore named as responsible person and has 30 days to request a hearing that could revoke or suspend licenses.

The Cleveland Press and the rise of afternoon papers

In 1964 the Cleveland Press topped the Plain Dealer in circulation and ads, but by 1980 it lagged while the Plain Dealer grew, reflecting shifts in industry and Cleveland’s economy. Traffic jams, TV news, and a population move from blue to white collar kept the Press fading as nearby counties adopted new papers.
