Johncock wins rain-shortened Indy 500 by slim margin
Gordon Johncock claimed the 1973 Indianapolis 500 in a rain shortened race after 233 laps, by a razor thin .16 second margin over Rick Mears. The veteran driver, 45, reflected that this victory felt less dramatic than his Michigan 200 triumph in 1976, with a career of near-misses weighing on him. Johncock led 13 laps mid race and again late to secure his second title in his 18th straight Indy 500 start.
