Referee selection draws criticism in Elyria

Elyria Municipal Court Judge James P Horn named James Peter Henderson 50 to be referee of small claims court drawing ire from Judge Stephen R Nagy who says he was not consulted. Henderson to work about 18 000 a year and handle roughly 50 cases weekly while Nagy proposes pro tem referees at about 4 000 total for the city and questions the need for a full time referee. Nagy disputes the process, cites OH law, and hints at possible political angles.

Sohio unit to buy Elyria Pfaudler operations

Sohio Industrial Products Co. plans to acquire Sybron’s Pfaudler operations for about 43 million dollars, including a 250-employee Elyria plant. Pfaudler makes glass-lined reactors and tanks for chemical and pharma industries and operates in Germany, Mexico, Brazil, and Scotland. The sale, part of a Sybron divestiture program, should close in Q3.

Supreme Court expands auto search powers across car items

The Supreme Court in a 6 3 decision expands police authority to search any container found in a car without a warrant. Alchem-Tron gets another 60 day permit extension

Elyria Mayor Michael Keys grants Alchem-Tron Inc. a further 60-day extension for its controversial 812 million deep well injection waste plant on Infirmary Road. The firm faces opposition from locals after a 7 million federal suit and 67 000 petition signatories. A hearing is set for June 15.
