Lorain County’s jail costs fuel budget crisis
Lorain County faces a 1.57 million deficit as it fights to pass a 0.5 percent piggyback sales tax in the June 7 vote. Since 1974 the general fund more than doubled to 12.7 million, while sheriff's costs surged to 1.43 million, largely due to jail operations. The 1970s federal financing left operations unfunded, locking the county into high ongoing costs and a sprawling 64,000 square foot jail designed for federal guidelines.

Kahl guilty in marshals deaths
Yorie Kahl and Scott Faul were found guilty on two counts of second degree murder for the February shootings that killed two U.S. marshals near Medina North Dakota during an arrest attempt on fugitive Gordon Kahl. Each defendant also faced related first degree murder and assault charges.
