Salvadoran rebels claim killing U S adviser in warning to Reagan
Radio Farabundo Marti claimed responsibility for the assassination of Navy Lt Cmdr Albert A. Schaufelberger in San Salvador. The group called the act patriotic and warned Reagan’s policies would yield a harvest of American dead. Schaufelberger, deputy commander of the 52 U.S. advisers in El Salvador, was shot three times in his car near the Central American University. His coffin was flown to Virginia Beach amid an honor guard. A Salvadoran judge complained U.S. officials blocked access to evidence as authorities investigate the murder. Intelligence reports hint at possible rebel movements in Usulutan and San Vicente, signaling a potential offensive.
