Not Random Slayings Tie to Atlanta Victims

Atlanta detectives report most of 28 young black homicide victims over 22 months died without a struggle and may have known their killers. Public Safety Commissioner Lee P. Brown notes no signs of pursuit and considers prior contact or a money motive. The latest victim, 27-year-old Nathaniel Cater, was found in the Chattahoochee River with asphyxia by strangulation, bringing adult strangulations to five of 17 total asphyxia cases. Cater’s background and drinkers’ influence are discussed as tests proceed.

United Mine Workers chief reports hope for soft coal settlement

UMW President Sam Church and Bituminous Coal Operations Association officials emerged from seven hours of bargaining optimistic about a settlement of the 63 day old soft coal strike that idled 160 000 miners. Church planned to brief the 39 member bargaining council, which must approve any tentative agreement before rank and file ratification. Unrealized terms included a disputed royalty fee clause for non union coal processed at operator plants.
