French Against U S Tariff Increases
PARIS May 28 The French Ministry of Commerce said it saw little hope for more favorable terms in the proposed United States Tariff Bill. A spokesman said French commercial attaches in Washington did all they could, but increases would ruin much of French commerce with the United States, especially gloves perfumes and silk stockings. The note warned that reduced French exports could force France to scrap American purchases, hurting both nations.

Police recover stolen gems from East Coast jewel heist
New York police announced the arrest of a sixth gang member, Robert C. Nelson of Sheepshead Bay, as they seized more than $1 million in jewels found in city bank vaults under Nelson and his alleged wife Elizabeth Keating. Cardinal Louis Lucon, 87, archbishop of Rheims and dean of French cardinals, died in Rheims at 8 30 a m after a long illness. Prohibition Chief Orders Destruction of Seized Liquor Articles
In Columbus on May 28 Prohibition Commissioner Rupert R Beetham ordered state prohibition agents to destroy all articles and materials seized in liquor raids unless courts direct another disposition. He warned of disciplinary action for noncompliance after an investigation into the disappearance of 1200 pounds of confiscated sugar in Perry county. Dry agent H F Teal led the raid and took responsibility for the sugar distribution.
