Apply in furrows 4 to 5 inches deep and form a ridge by folding soil over the fertilizer a week to 10 days before planting. Set slips 16 to 18 inches apart in 30 to 36 inch rows. dry-fleshed types include Yellow Jersey and Big Stem Jersey, moist types Nancy Hall and Porto Rico. Shallow cultivation suppresses weeds until vines run, with hand pulling if weeds persist.
