Loyalty Panel Starts John Service Hearing
Washington state department loyalty panel began a secret hearing to assess John Stewart Service's loyalty to the United States. The 40 year old career diplomat testified amid derogatory evidence while witnesses were called. Service has 17 years in the foreign service and is a target of Senator McCarthy who accuses the department of harboring security risks. He faced arrest in the 1945 Amerasia case but was not indicted. The Civil Service Commission previously cleared him.

Service hears secret inquiry into charges against official
The board urged an extra hearing so he could testify about questioned evidence. Charges have not been public. Service, once cleared, may keep details secret. The state department kept the session and panel names hidden. Service served on the U S diplomatic staff during World War II under ambassador Hurley in Nanking. Hurley opposed his stance, backing Chiang Kai-Shek. A 1946 Senate probe dropped the protest. Service was briefly suspended during the Amerasia case but returned after no indictment.
