Former Red Cross secretary Fern M. Smith dies in New Jersey
Mrs James B. Thomas reports the death of Fern M. Smith, former secretary of the Elyria Red Cross chapter, who had lived with her sister in Upper Montclair, New Jersey, after years in Pasadena. Born March 20, 1872 in Elyria, she taught, trained as a nurse, helped found the Elyria Council of Church Women, and served as secretary of the local Red Cross chapter 1925-1933. Burial will be in Ridgelawn Cemetery, Elyria, after services at her sister’s home Friday afternoon and at the Harold Dicken Funeral Home Saturday morning.

Auto Driver Faces Hit-Skip Charge In Ridgeville Crash
A hit-skip charge will be led Monday in Common Pleas court against Alvin C. Sanders of 2157 Wyandott Avenue Lakewood for a Wednesday afternoon accident in Ridgeville injuring 15 year old Miss Maxine Haralampous. Sanders admitted he was the driver after witnesses and deputies traced him from the scene. He initially claimed another person was driving and fled the area. A chase involving Earl King, who said he drove 90 miles an hour trying to overtake the fleeing car, ended when Sanders failed to make a turn onto Case road and struck a drain. King helped confront Sanders after he allegedly attempted to retrieve the car keys. The story continues on Page 8.
