Salisbury advice urges patience with picking ripe strawberries. Flavor is fixed at harvest, so wait until fruit is fully red with only a pale ground spot. Mark August 20 on the garden calendar and plan late August to early September work to yield red ripe berries next year.
Rayner Brothers Berry Farms president Curt Massey urges late-summer feeding for strawberries to build energy in crowns and promote next year’s larger berry crop. He recommends cottonseed meal or weathered horse manure, bed renewal after harvest, proper spacing, and mulching to protect plants in winter. With proper care, plantings can yield well for 4 to 5 years.
The New London High School music department will present its annual spring band and chorus concert at 2 30 p m Sunday in the high school gym.
