Rail service halts as signalmen strike

The 13 000 member Brotherhood of Railway Signalmen led a nationwide walkout halting Amtrak and most freight. About 600 000 other rail workers honored picket lines as shifts failed to move, crippling commutes in New York Philadelphia and Chicago. Lightning outage in Lorain County cuts power citywide

A single lightning strike hit an Ohio Edison transmission line on Taylor Street in Elyria causing a half county blackout within a minute at 4 17 p m. Power was restored to Lorain in four minutes and to other towns in minutes with breakers switched remotely. The storm, while windy and wet, caused no major accidents despite traffic light outages.

Judge Ewing to Head Lima State Hospital Inquiry

Lorain County Probate Judge Harold S. Ewing will chair a committee to study Lima State Hospital conditions. Dr. Victor Victoraff announced the move as part of a broader state review of mental institutions led by Cleveland’s Citizens' Task Force on Mental Health and Retardation. A report for Lima is expected in 30 days.
