The nationwide rail walkout disrupts steel and auto production, halts shipments of perishables, and drives the New York Stock Exchange lower. Nixon urges halt to July 1 to allow bargaining with 13 000 signalmen as lawmakers consider emergency legislation extending the delay to October 1.

More than 9,000 Northeast Ohio workers lose jobs as the railroad signalmen’s walkout disrupts parts and shipping. Lorain County plants from Fisher Body to U S Steel face shutdowns or layoffs by week’s end if unresolved. Ford Lorain and other plants plan 10 hour shifts today with possible later cuts, while Bendix Westinghouse and Nordson Corp foresee shorter impact.
The House Ways and Means Committee backs a 5 percent increase in Social Security benefits and the core of Nixon's welfare reform. The measure would raise benefits by about 2.1 billion and start June 1, 1972, with bipartisan support and no immediate payroll tax changes beyond current provisions.
An 11 year old, Robert M Geisen, was struck and killed by a car on Sprague Road in Lorain County while chasing a golf ball into the street near his Columbia home. He died at 7 24 am at Southwest General Hospital Berea. The driver Robert Lundberg 23 Avon stated he could not stop after seeing the boy dart into the road. No charges planned. investigation to be referred to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor. The boy left behind parents Robert and Mrs Geisen and sisters Laura Audrey and Wendy. Funeral plans not set.
Vermilion psychiatrist Dr Margaret Read says guilt over abortion can arise years later for both legal and illegal procedures. She notes Ohio law allows abortion only in medical or psychological emergencies and that diagnosis requires careful psychiatric judgment.
Lorain Police Chief John Malinovsky denounces charges over bugging Wanda Tully’s office as character assassination and predicts civil suits. The case also names former Deputy Auditor George Zurich. both face felony counts for listening and transmitting private communications linked to a device found Feb 17 in Tully’s office. Bailiffs served arraignment summons as Malinovsky’s daughter is hospitalized.
Louis Kapp Sr of Belleville Illinois pleaded guilty before Judge LeRoy Kelly to charges in six indictments accusing him of selling unregistered oil and gas well shares in Lorain County The promotion involved 23 wells and over 1 million in investments and followed an extensive investigation by Prosecutor Joseph Granda's office The case was sent to the adult probation department for a pre sentence report with penalties potential up to five years and 5000 dollars for each offense
