President Hoover convened Interior Department officials at his mountain camp to review the department’s 85 million dollar annual outlay. He aims to cut waste without reducing wages or jobs, hoping to set an economy example for industry amid the depression and prevent a looming deficit.
Karl E. Avery a Birmingham village merchant and Florence town clerk, on trial since May 4 for first degree murder in the death of William Lambert a 64 year old retired farmer on Jan 6. Jurors three women and nine men expected to retire after morning arguments. Prosecutors argued Avery waited and killed Lambert in cold blood. defense contends Avery defended his wife and daughters from an attack.
Washington avenue entrance landscaping plans for Cascade park were presented by Mrs. L B Faurer to the D A R at the Y W C A yesterday afternoon. A Cleveland architect prepared the blueprints which were accepted without changes and work will proceed immediately.
Cloudy with showers moving in from the north and cooler temperatures expected. Yesterday's highs included Phoenix 98 and Huron 96 while lows ranged from White River 32 to Cochrane 32 and PAS 34. General conditions vary, with fair southern and eastern states and low pressure in the Great Basin.

Police investigate a theft at Charles Cunat home 124 Pasadena Avenue totaling 8475 in jewelry and personal items. Mrs Cunat says entries may have occurred Thursday afternoon while she worked in the rear yard and a well dressed man seen in the neighborhood is being sought.

Steubenville O May 16 One bandit was captured and another escaped today in a gun battle with six city patrolmen on a high plateau at Hast Steubenville W Va across the Ohio River from here Richard Thomas 22 of Steubenville offered no resistance when cornered by the patrolmen but his companion Chester Whirlow opened fire and dodged machine gun bullets in his escape across the hill
After months of vacancy Camp Iss-See-Kes on the Vermilion River rushes to open June 15 under H W Korner. Plans include repairs, improved sanitary water, and athletic upgrades led by four young leaders including David Griffiths and Robert Kaiser. Henry Lewis returns as camp cook. John Murbach Field, baseball diamonds, courts, track, miniature golf, and horse shoe court are part of improvements. Groups from Elyria, Lorain, and surrounding areas are scheduled to attend through the summer summer camp program runs about three months with multiple groups visiting beforehand.
Nobsit Clark of Stop 42 Cleveland Road was seriously injured yesterday afternoon at Ridgeville Center when a car driven by Mrs. Palmer backed over him. He was playing marbles behind the vehicle and was rushed to Elyria Clinic under Dr. R. W. Hancock.
Harry Queen, advertising manager for the Lorain Journal, testified in the $50,900 libel suit brought by M. F. Peer against the Journal. He corroborated that Samuel Horvitz was the actual owner, not merely a creditor, and said Calman offered him a job and stock with Horvitz’s sanction. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ossman denied evidence linking Peer to liquor traffic. the case centers on alleged libelous articles about Peer and horvitz’s control of the paper.
Lorain based Ohio Engineering Company was among Ohio firms awarded highway contracts in 11 counties. The firm received two awards totaling about 73 thousand dollars for paving two sections of the Ashland Loudonville and Ashland Shelby roads with waterbound macadam.

William J. Leahy a 47 year old grain broker from Cleveland and his 18 year old crippled daughter Margaret were burned to death when their car wrecked into a tree near Springfield Pennsylvania last night. Mrs Edith Leahy mother of the victims was seriously injured with two broken legs and unable to tell police details. Witnesses said the car driven at high speed swerved from the road and burst into flames trapping the pair while the mother was thrown clear.
Three Lorain County girls will receive diplomas from the Elyria Memorial Hospital School of Nursing at the Elk's Hall commencement Thursday night June 4 announced by hospital superintendent Frank W. Hoover. The baccalaureate sermon will be by Rev. William Muir Auld May 31 at First Congregational church. The graduates are Helen A. Mischka and Dorothy M. Wragg of Amherst and Thelma C. Stiles of Elyria.
Fairfield Air Depot hosts about 672 U S Army aerial fighting craft for the annual air maneuvers described as the greatest sky spectacle since World War I. Planes including pursuit fighters bombers and observation craft assemble at Wright and Fairfield fields after daybreak. Initial drills over Ohio Indiana and Kentucky begin with no fatal accidents, weather delaying some arrivals but not the program.

United States foreign trade fell again in April as both imports and exports dropped from March and lagged April last year. Exports reached 217,990,090 dollars versus 331,732,090 a year earlier, while imports stood at 1 7,909,000 dollars against 397,821,900.
Residents of Amityville on Long Island were told of a death by own action cult with at least 24 of 50 members dead. Louise Schwarz, 51, a spinster, is under indictment for second degree murder in her invalid brother Edward’s death, claimed to be his own suicide as part of the club. Police say she had motive and opportunity to shoot him. He was found last Wednesday in best clothes, seated with a revolver in his lap.
Two major secret investigations involving social and professional figures in Lorain County are to be presented to the county grand jury when it reconvenes on May 25. Prosecutor Don W.
