Ohio Sums Up Auto Train Collisions Across State
Ohio again leads the nation in auto train collisions with 1951 marking the fifth consecutive year of the dubious record. About 144 deaths and 400 injuries occurred last year from autos colliding with railroad equipment, with over a million dollars in property damage. Many crashes happen at crossings despite warnings, and motorists failing to shift to a lower gear or ignoring signals account for roughly half of incidents. The Ohio traffic code directs motorists to stop at active signals or flags and only cross when safe.
