Costly Early Morning Fire At Merthe Store

Elyria faced its costliest blaze in over two years as the C. H. Merthe and Company department store on Broad Street suffered heavy damage. The fire started around 12 48 a m and quickly spread with smoke and water damaging merchandise across the first floor and basement, hindering even the remodeled fixtures. Eyewitness Aud rey Snodgrass escaped via a second floor window as dense smoke filled the building. Fire crews worked to control the blaze as investigators began assessing damage and cause.

Harter Wanamaker And Mrs Perry Are Winners

Congressman Don W. Harter of the 14th district was renominated on the Democratic ticket and will face Judge Walter B. Wanamaker of Akron, nominated by the Republicans. Mrs Goldie Perry of Elyria won the state central committeewoman race, defeating Mrs Marguerine H. Dilley of Akron.

Germans Retreat From Narvik Area After Allied Destruction

Stockholm report via Tidningen quoted by Exchange Telegraph that Allied forces destroyed Narvik port and forced German troops to retreat toward the Swedish frontier. The dispatch noted the action occurred in the Narvik area and described the German withdrawal as a retreat in the Arctic theater.

Four From Lorain County Nominated For State Senate

Lorain County voters nominated four candidates for the state senate. Republican P. H. Rogers of Bei den led with 15 444 votes, Joseph Jameson earned 9 262, and Wallace Barnhill had 9 056. On the Democratic side former State Senator William F. Hurley and Maurice C. Brown won the two announced nominations.

Wickens And Branson Win Nominations

Lorain county Republicans nominated Harold H. Burton for U S senator over Dudley White and Charles E Wharton. George H. Knapp won sheriff over Gerald Nau. Ted Wickens and Alan Branson were chosen for county commissioners. Knapp beat Nau in Lorain, Nau led Elyria, indicating sectional voting patterns. Eleven candidates contested county commissioner. Late Returns Give Cleveland Mayor Victory

May 15. Harold H. Burton of Cleveland clinched the Republican nomination for U S Senator in Ohio as Martin L. Davey recaptured the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. Burton led Dudley A. White by 42 776 votes with 17081 of 624 precincts reporting. McSweeney led Bigelow for Senate, with Taft securing a presidential compliment.

Lorain and Elsha Levy Proposals Defeated by Voters

Elsha’s half mill relief levy was defeated 1215 to 3292. Lorain’s half mill this year and one mill next faced a 6290 to 2813 defeat. Mayor Petro warned the city may face delinquent tax borrowing if the Supreme Court disallows it, with no action until a court ruling in June.
