Forecast of Fifty Percent Local Primary Turnout

Election officials predict about half of roughly 40 000 eligible county voters will cast ballots in today’s primary. Democratic and Republican ballots list 13 and 52 names respectively, with long ballots slowing counting after polls close at 6 30. Returns likely won’t show trends until late tonight.

Predict Light Vote In Ohio Primary Amid Apathy

Unsettled weather and voter apathy were expected to keep turnout low in the 1940 Ohio primary. Secretary of State George Neffner warned counties Pickaway and Muskingum to watch for election law violations as officers and Circleville police monitor two wards for vote buying. Ballots open 6:30 am to 6:30 pm with about 1.6 million expected to vote, plus 32 delegates and 32 alternates to the Republican National convention and 60 to the Democratic. General Winkelman announced Dutch forces retreating behind the Holland water line are holding in North Holland while Germans press to breach the Zuider Zee dyke toward Amsterdam. The Helder base remains Dutch and Rotterdam’s north is still in Dutch hands.

German Blitz Through Holland Claimed Complete

The German high command claimed a major objective in the blitz, sweeping through Holland to the sea and into France along a 50 mile Meuse front. County to Purchase Notes For Water Line Supplies

Edward Schneider of Dover Center Dies Suddenly

Edward Schneider 42 proprietor of Schneider's Inn and tourist camp Dover Center Center Ridge road died at Elyria Memorial Hospital at 9:55 last night from a heart attack after being brought to the hospital at 9 p.m. He is survived by his wife LaVerne and two daughters Evelyn and Marian. Funeral services set for 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Henry A. Leimkuehler Funeral Home Cleveland with body at the Schneider home on Center Ridge road until 10 a.m. Thursday.

Election Returns Will Be Tabulated As Fast As Received

Primary results will be posted as received, with many figures not expected until late evening due to many candidates and issues and a heavy vote. New Firing Control Mechanism Announced

In San Francisco on May 14 a new firing control mechanism that compensates for vehicle movement has been turned over to the U S government. Developed by Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company it attaches to a gun on a tank or ship and keeps bullets hitting the original target despite lurching motions.

German Drive Reaches Meuse Front As Antwerp Threat Looms

German armed forces swept from Holland to the seacoast and broke the Allied line in Turnhout Belgium, advancing toward Antwerp and Brussels. A Meuse front battle raged as Paris announced German entry into France to flank the Maginot line with thousands of planes tanks and artillery involved.

Butler Rules On Relief Funds

County Prosecutor Howard Butler informed county commissioners by letter that any relief money borrowed from the auto tax fund must be shared with Burria and Lorain in proportion to their needs. The plan to borrow 25000 from the auto tax fund would require replacement from the county general fund later. Another option is borrowing against delinquent taxes, with a Ohio Supreme Court case set for May 27 to test legality, decision due about a week after. The county currently has no relief funds.
