The Wellington Exempted Village Schools will have their books audited by the state to see if a deficit qualifies for a state loan. State auditor examiners are conducting routine checks as treasurer William Lilley Jr. notes the loan would be moot if the 7.2 mill three year emergency levy passes in June.
Wellington school board failed to renew Doak Markley’s contract with a 3-2 vote, requiring a 4-1 majority per OSBA ruling. Markley, Wellington’s head football coach with an 8-2 record, may seek a larger district coaching job as the district plans six sports for 1982-83 and weighs reinstating the driver education program.
Wellington Community Hospital celebrates its 20th anniversary and National Hospital Week with an open house from 1 to 4 pm. The Binder Building hosts a mini health fair, CPR demonstrations by EMS, free blood pressure checks, pulmonary screening, and services display by HELP Inc. Architects from Collins and Rimer will discuss expansion plans. Visitors tour respiratory therapy, operating room, in service area, and computer room.
The Titanic struck an iceberg off Newfoundland on April 14, 1914, and sank early the next morning with about 1,513 lives lost. The disaster spurred the first international convention for safety at sea, held in London the following year.
