Black River trims four teachers amid budget crisis

Spencer The Black River Board of Education suspended contracts for Linda Jacobs Roy Winkler John Fisher and Thomas Miller as part of a reduction in force prompted by a failed 7.8 mill levy and cuts to state funds and a $418000 loan repayment. All day kindergarten was approved as permanent, and the board plans to interview superintendent candidates as Searing resigns in July. Graduation lists were approved pending completion of requirements.

Drain of water revenues spurs concern in Sheffield

Sheffield Village Council voiced worry over dwindling water revenues after switching from Elyria to Avon Lake. Clerk Ridenour warned it would hurt coffers unless lower rates take effect, as $11,800 remains in village funds. Mayor Pando noted pending system connections and arrival of inner sleeve this week. Council approved Ordinance 886 for cable to schools and Ordinance 892 to seek bids for a cable franchise, though the latter is a nonbinding prototype. Firefighter appointments were made on probation and a resolution urged halting the nuclear arms race.

Heart Association honors 100 Lorain County volunteers

More than 100 Lorain County volunteers were honored for 1981 service to the American Heart Association at an awards dinner at the Elyria Holiday Inn. Noted recipients included Pamela Falasco, Delaurice Carle, Patricia Williams, Edith Lewandowski, Dorothy Lee, and Kenneth Lengel for CPR and school programs. County fund-raising volunteers James Reynolds, Terry Fredericks, and Charles Baumgartner led the 1981-82 campaign, which raised over $17,000.

Havens and Emerson marks 60 years of service

The Cleveland based environmental engineering firm Havens and Emerson celebrates six decades serving Elyria and nearby communities. Founded in 1922 the firm landed its first Elyria city contract in 1925 for sewerage and drainage study and now designs expansion to the waste water treatment plant. It also works on an industrial waste pretreatment study for Elyria and will engineer the west side interceptor project.
