Gilligan says he has enough votes to pass budget

Gov. John J. Gilligan announced at a Columbus news conference that he can pass his 9.1 billion budget on a floor vote with 50 votes required in the 99 member House. He cited Speaker Kurfess’s promise to bring the package to a vote next week and noted possible support for a county income tax remains unconfirmed. He also commented on an investigation into alleged brutality at Lima State Hospital and said he would await findings before deciding on further action.

Dollar Gains as Speculators Hold Off on Reverting Marks

The dollar firmed slightly on a nervous market but speculators showed no rush to convert West German marks back to dollars. The shift downward last weekend probably ends the worst currency crisis in two years, though officials warn pressure may last months. The dollar advanced to about 3.5475 marks in Frankfurt while other currencies showed mixed movements as Europe floats its exchange rates.

Airman in England dies in car crash

Airman Frabotta of Elyria and Grafton area died in an auto accident near Oxford University, England. He enlisted in 1969 and was stationed about ten miles from London. funeral arrangements are handled by Russell D. Fulton Funeral Home. He is survived by his parents, sister, and grandparents.

Youths in High Speed Chase End With One Caught One Free

In North Olmsted a high speed pursuit ended with one youth jailed on charges of fleeing an officer and no license. A second suspect fled in a separate car and eluded capture after crashing into an ice cream parlor window in Fairview Park. The chase began when Elyria police reported a stolen car at 2:10 a.m. and continued to Lorain Road where North Olmsted units blocked the road ahead of a roadblock. The second cruiser arrived as the thief then struck the roadblock and fled toward the Collins edge.
