Metropolitan parks plan to meet open space demand in Lorain County

The Lorain County Metropolitan Park District, governed by three commissioners, aims to expand open spaces as incomes rise and leisure time grows. Since 1959 it has spent just over 3 million dollars in county taxes to build metropolitan parks, bridging neighborhood and state park roles.

U S dollar sinks on European markets after closure

In Bonn the U S dollar fell between 3 and 7.05 percent as markets reopened after a five day emergency halt. The West German mark rose about 3.4 percent above its official rate in Frankfurt, devaluing the dollar by 3.7 percent and lifting the mark by 3.89 percent.

Brown files 3 pollution actions in Ohio courts

Ohio Attorney General William J. Brown announced three pollution lawsuits and a criminal action. A Bowling Green Municipal Court charge targets David L. Meyer of the Bloomdale Ann Page plant for discharging inadequately treated waste. Other suits target A and P tomato plant in Wood County for permit violations and Fletcher Heath utility for sewage discharge, plus Ernie's Trailer Park in Proctorville for unpermitted sewage.

Mills predicts revenue sharing won't get to vote

In Nashville Mills, Ways and Means chairman, predicted the House will not vote on Nixon's plan to direct 5 billion in federal revenue to states with no strings. He said the Ways and Means Committee will hear the bill later this month but will not approve it. Mills urged a program by program approach and said relief would come to state and local governments in the right way.

Police Find 240000 Nickels Spilled Along Highway

State police spent about nine hours recovering an estimated 240000 nickels spilled from a tractor trailer on U.S. 11. The truck from Harrisburg bound for Lancaster area banks carried 3.68 million coins worth 184000 dollars. The nickel load shifted as the driver braked to avoid a car, the driver Pat Martin said. Troopers sifted sand and recovered all nickels. The coins came from the Denver mint and were destined for Lancaster, Pennsylvania banks.

Ohio plans home liquor delivery pilot in two months

State Liquor Director Richard E. Guggenheim announced a two month trial of home delivery for Ohio residents at a special case discount. Orders would be handled by wholesalers in each city with Cincinnati already set. If successful, credit card payments may be allowed by legislature. otherwise cash or check with delivery after bank clearance.

U.S. Drawdown in Vietnam Drops Troop Levels

Saigon AP reports the United States begins withdrawing another American division, deactivates a major command, and cuts 6,300 troops, lowering total U.S. forces to 267,100 the lowest in five years. The Americal Division battalion near Da Nang and the 2,215-man Marine logistics command at Da Nang are slated for deactivation. Casualty notes include 41 civilians dead and 16 wounded in river mine incidents amid Buddha's birthday cease-fires.

Drugs stolen from Carlisle clinic in Lorain County

Nine different types of prescription drugs and needles were stolen from the Doctor's Clinic in Carlisle Township Lorain County. Intruders forced a north side window to access a storage room and took unspecified quantities during a burglary reported at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Tax Freedom Day marks shift to individual earnings in 1971

New York AP reports May 10, 1971 as Tax Freedom Day when the average American first works for himself not tax bills. Chamber estimates show rising per capita taxes from 1902’s 17 dollars to 1971’s estimated 1,200 dollars, with federal receipts at 124 billion in 1970 and states collecting 48 billion.
