London May 11 1937 King George VI in his first coronation week speech pledged to carry on his father’s work for the welfare of the empire while standing at Buckingham Palace before dominion prime ministers and colonial representatives He spoke of duty and unity and faced the transition from his brother’s troubled reign. Security was tightened as crown jewels moved to Westminster Abbey and observers watched for threats ahead of the coronation.

Blood found in cottage linked to robbery suspect held at Erie
A quiet investigation by Deputy Sheriff Samuel Paonesga traces a blood stained scene at the Dyke property on Cleveland road to an Erie hold of a young man suspected in a local robbery. Two men and a woman, said to be the mothers of the men, occupied the cabin Thursday. Edwin Dyke reported seeing the two men leave in a car about 6 pm. Police in Erie report one man in custody for robbery, another escaped, and the woman’s fate remains unclear as authorities prepare to question the man held today. An ERie car license helped identify the trio’s movements and the cottage.
