Two Sailors Die as Mercury Strikes In Elyria
Two sailors, John Gillis 41 and Joseph Flannigan 48, were killed when the Cleveland bound Mercury train struck them near West Bridge street in Elyria Saturday night. Gillis was hurled onto a car, Flannigan’s body found later along the tracks. Identified by Erie lake boatman William Call, both men originated from Nova Scotia and England respectively, with no fixed address. County burial at county expense expected if no relatives claim bodies today.

Elyria High Students Hear Scotch Quartette

Certificates For New Citizens At Elyria Program Tonight
Judge Arthur Day of the Ohio Supreme Court will deliver the commencement address as 31 residents in Elyria and vicinity receive citizenship certificates at Elyria High School Auditorium at 3 a m tonight. John Kolopos, Americanization officer of the local American Legion Post, organized the program. Those honored comprise nearly all alien residents in the area from the class of 77 who passed final citizenship exams last week, with 16 cases mailed in. A dinner at the Elks Club precedes the event.

Oberlin College Announces Three Faculty Appointments
Oberlin College trustees disclose three new appointments to the faculty and administration after an executive committee meeting in Cleveland. Leslie S. Ries of the University of Chicago becomes Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds, Mrs. Harold Van Metre of Lisbon Iowa joins as Assistant Dean of Women, and the Rev Leonard Stidley of New York joins the Graduate School of Theology faculty. Ries, born 1890 Chicago, formerly led UC’s buildings and grounds. Van Metre, Vassar 1917 alumna, has long engaged in college affairs. Stidley replaces Professor G Walter Fiske at the Theology school.

Commander Charles E Rosendahl a leading airship expert told a federal board of inquiry that the Hindenburg was lighter than usual during landing and was destroyed by fire at the end of its voyage from Germany. He had no knowledge of the fire’s cause while detailing the landing. The inquiry sought hydrogen fire origins and prevention measures for future lighter than air travel. London reports Dick Merrill completed a successful trans Atlantic flight from New York to England landing at Northweald Essex at 6 10 P M. The air ministry said he immediately departed for Croydon at 6 20 P M He described rough weather all the way and said they hope to start back to New York on Thursday Copilot Lambie said the plane averaged about 160 miles an hour.

Police filed reports of several weekend traffic crashes. Ells Brown of 448 West 15th Street was treated at Elyria Memorial for minor injuries after a collision at West Avenue and Sixth Street with Lee Petty’s car, injuring Brown as a passenger.
