Mars Mars Mars launch fails dooming historic voyage

A Centaur rocket carrying the first of two Mars satellites tumbled out of control minutes after liftoff from Cape Kennedy. The Mariner payload disappeared in flames as engineers assessed the cause, delaying the Mars dual mission and risking the June 6 launch window. 27 Years Of Mother’s Day Roses Remembered In California

In Redwood City California a dozen sweetheart roses arrive each Mother’s Day for Mrs May Robinson for the 27th year. An anonymous donor provides the flowers in memory of her son Bernard killed in 1943 as a Navy torpedo bomber gunner at Guadalcanal. The donor remains unnamed, and the origin of deliveries varies from Oakland to occasional shipments by air. Mrs Robinson, 72 and blind since shortly after his death, believes the roses come from a survivor in her son’s World War II unit who visited after the war.
