Train hits car. one man dies near Oberlin Road crossing
A recently discharged sailor, William L. Hubbard, 19, of Lorain, died after a car train collision on Oberlin Road near State Route 113. Driver Robert J. Hopkins, 21, from the same address, was critically injured with multiple fractures and a crushed chest. Hubbard had moved from Baltimore to live with Hopkins, a Navy buddy, and both men had served in Bethesda, Maryland. The Penn Central train, traveling east, struck the northbound auto as Hopkins tried to stop, the crossing marked by a warning sign and stop sign with a street light.

Fire at Carver Convalescent Home Kills Nine
An early morning blaze at the Carver Convalescent Home in Springfield II engulfed the second floor of the two story facility. Nine people died at Memorial Hospital and thirty were injured or treated for burns and smoke inhalation at local hospitals. Cause not yet known.
