At a May meeting the Elyria City Board of Education discussed likely retrenchments due to an expected 20 percent drop in property valuations and possible state tax changes. Proposal favored combines classes to avoid hiring two new elementary and two new high school teachers, potentially halting salary increases or altering the schedule.
Finance committee reports against paying 625 as the citys share of police pensions for 1931 and notes the present pension fund of about 36000 is ample. They cite the attorney general ruling and urge awaiting year end balance before any further appropriations, with Mayor and Major Hewitt supporting caution on tax levies.
Waverly Ohio May 3 Deputy Marshall Roy Downing killed Gale Pendleton 20 during a chase after Pendleton was arrested on liquor charges. Pendleton struck the field fence and died at Chillicothe hospital after being fired upon as he fled. An official investigation was ordered by county authorities.
Forecast notes showers in Ohio tonight and Wednesday with cooler air on Wednesday. Central barometric trend moves eastward, increasing clouds and then showers later tonight into Wednesday, followed by a drop in temperatures Wednesday afternoon or night.
Elyria Memorial Hospital announces National Hospital Day on May 12 to honor Florence Nightingale. In Cleveland on May 5 two armed robbers held up the A T Hueter jewelry store as it opened. They bound and gagged owner Hueter clerk Howard Druggle and janitress Anna Kremen, escaping with about $1500 in cash and jewelry valued between $5,900 and $6,000.
The Lorain County General Health District Advisory Council met Monday May 4 at 2 p.m. in the director's room of the Lorain County Savings and Trust Building Rivera. J. N. Stone reelected president and Dr. C D Barrett presented the annual report detailing 5062 visits by six employees and inspections of dairy farms schools and tourist camps. Marion Howell Western Reserve University urged nurses to interpret public health science to communities. Dr. W E Hart emphasized dedication over fees, the value of inoculation and enthusiasm in public health work. Page 4 continues.
Water Valley Mississippi. W W Wagner president of the Bank of Water Valley and his wife were found murdered near their home today their bodies hacked with an ax. Wagner buried in a shallow grave about 65 yards from the house and his wife in a second grave some 200 yards away. Officers followed a blood trail from the house and noted a struggle. They believe the killer struck them with an ax, then dragged and buried the bodies.
Greeley Cola May 5 a mother and two small children died when their home burned down authorities say the fire was incendiary. James B. Foster the father, age 8, was taken into custody and charged with arson and homicide.
Mayor James A. Hewitt presented a detailed proposal to remodel city hall and build a new fire station at Broad Street’s western end. The plan reallocates space, moving the fire department to allow police use, shifts the water department downstairs, and preserves room for a future municipal court. Estimated total for the fire station and city hall work is under 225,000 dollars, with a new city hall near 400,000 dollars. The proposal was sent to the police and fire and building and lands committees for review and a meeting with the mayor.
Police and detectives hunt a gunman blamed for a week of shootings in Cleveland. Louise Gaudig, 17, was gravely wounded while walking with a 16 year old, and Geraldine Marko, 20, was grazed in the neck. Mrs Nina Palgye, 36, was shot in the left breast. The assailant’s sedan fled each time.
An important meeting of the directors of Federal Highway No. 20 Association was held in Norwalk with reports on the state conference in Columbus. The group discussed Route 20 improvements, new signs, road engineering actions, and local safety measures, with six projects advancing including detour reductions and bridge expansions. Attendees heard updates from committees on membership, programs, signs, and accomplishments, chaired by F. A. Sher Till of Oberlin.
Bryan Untiecht, 15, hero of the Pleasant Hill school bus disaster, reached Towner Colorado by rail today. He stepped down from the car with wide eyes and was greeted by a small group of local residents after his long journey home from what the story describes as a great adventure.
South Amherst school jumps into the lead in the Chronicle Telegram cup race for class A schools with 61 percent to Brownhelm 62 percent, as Brownhelm remains confident more qualify. Final qualifying time set for Wednesday afternoon. Trinity Ridgeville Markley and Fields show notable gains while Pittsfield No 7 F leads class B. Blue Ribbon winners announced Monday at Vin Cent Russia No 3 and Pittsfield No 6 with 1410 total pupils, listing names of recipients.
Elsina City Board of Education reaffirmed policies barring married women from teaching in city schools and prohibiting candles or open fires in school buildings at its March meeting. The policy to hire only unmarried teachers remains, with limited exceptions. Two organizations requesting candle use for upcoming programs were denied and urged to use safer lighting alternatives.
Joseph Woods a 57 year old Avon Lake man fell from the Fulton Dennison Bridge arch in Brookside Park while removing forms from fresh concrete. He plunged into the valley below and died. Woods left behind a widow and three young children. He worked for the Shunfin-Yankex Construction Co. and was killed during the task.
Mayor James A Hewitt and Councilman Lawrence Locke clashed over whether it is proper for a city official to be closely connected to a business with legislation the city may pass. Locke is agent for indemnity policies from Elyria Coach Company, which the council considered for approval.
Sheriff Clarence Adams and four deputies investigate a reported submerged automobile in a quarry hole 45 feet deep north of Columbia Station. Residents noted oil, wheel tracks, and a possible theft motive as the car may have been pushed over the edge to claim insurance.
In Hartford on March 3 Homer L. Johnson of Durham denounced Republicans and challenged Rep. B. H. Mathias to a fist fight. The scene sparked desk banging as Johnson took off his coat and was dragged from the chamber by two policemen. Doctors cited nervous strain amid the disruption.
April mayor's court receipts total $895.55 with fines and costs at $846.70. Building permits brought in $21 and soft drink licenses $22.50, plus miscellaneous collections of $5.35, reported to council last night.
Ohio council opens first reading of a three year gas franchise ordinance lowering the domestic rate from 60 to 50 cents per thousand cubic feet. The measure includes a 1.09 minimum charge and a 10 percent late fee, with possible referral to the utilities commission if not accepted by the gas company.
Three people died in two trolley accidents in Lima on Monday night. Ella Mae Hall, five, was struck and dragged about 100 feet by a streetcar near her home. H. M. Bernstein, 63, deputy recorder, and Joseph Bernstein, 60, editor of the Cleveland News, were struck while crossing near the Public Square. Bernstein died six hours after the crash at St. Rita's Hospital. Hooker, a 60 year old former real estate operator, died at the scene. Motormen were held blameless.
