Firefighters join police strike in Birmingham
Striking firefighters join a citywide walkout that began with police and garbagemen, closing services as National Guard troops are activated. Mayor David Vann offered amnesty if workers return by 8 a.m., while threatening fines for continued absence. Over 300 IAFF members voted to strike, prompting 200 National Guard to assist, and two northside houses burned despite a unit response. Police, bolstered by state troopers and deputies, saw about 90 percent of patrols idle.
