Vermilion will see James Forthofer and Fred Ostrander contesting November for mayor after leading the unofficial primary results. Forthofer 64 and Ostrander 66 led with 697 and 331 votes, respectively, while Shawn Perry and Monica Stark trailed.
Ashley Swiger spotted a distressed duck circling a catch basin on North Abbe Road around 11 a.m. Lorain County rangers Sheffield police and firefighters joined the effort. Eight ducklings were finally reunited with their mallard mother hours later.
Sheffield police Officer Matt Lawson helps Lorain County Metro Parks Capt. Brian Holmes corral ducklings trapped on Abbe Road. Lawson also guards a rescued duckling while Holmes releases the birds in a follow up to the Tuesday incident.
The Lorain County Rural Wastewater District aims to extend a 4.5 mile sewer line from Cinnamon Lake to the West Salem treatment plant after expansion. Cinnamon Lake will exit its own plant, with LORCO gaining customers and West Salem residents benefiting from improvements funded by the plan.
North Ridgeville voters ousted 20 year council member Bernadine Butkowski in a GOP at large primary. Leader Kevin Corcoran led with 697 votes (33%), followed by Martin DeVries 498 (24%) and Michelle Hung 489 (23%). Butkowski gathered 423 (20%). Democratic results show Ray McLaughlin III top with 299 (29%), Jerry Armstrong 293 (29%).
In Lorain the three incumbents held their council at large seats as Mary Springowski led four candidates with 1332 votes 32 percent Mitch Fallis 1067 25 percent Joe Koziura 951 23 percent and Matt Harkins 849 20.22 percent. Ward results show W Henley defeating Gates Flores won a primary for council president and Thornsberry to face a Republican in November. No independents ran for at large though write in Trina Smith met 50 vote threshold for November ballot.
Northbound lanes of South Abbe Road near East Broad Street to 547 Abbe Road O Reilly Auto Parts are closed today for water main repair. Northbound traffic must detour while southbound remains open. Closures run 9 a.m. to 4 30 p.m. per staff reports.
