Oberlin council hikes sewer rates to hire extra worker
Oberlin City Council voted to raise sewer charges instead of granting an exception to equal employment opportunity rules for a sludge removal contract. It rejected a $40,000 bid from Hanover Associates of Loudonville for 2 million gallons of sludge due to EEO noncompliance, opting to fund one more employee to haul sludge to farms while EPA mandates curb overflow into Plum Creek. City Manager Thomas Dalton noted the move aligns with EPA rulings and the county CETA hiring freeze, with a rate increase expected to be below 12 cents.
