Fatal benzol accident at National Tube plant
Two National Tube Co workers died after inhaling benzol fumes at the coke plant around 7 p m. Russell W. Lyman age 50 of Elyria and Finkie Turner of Lorain were found unconscious while Turner had entered the line to adjust flow. Coroner Tillman said fumes are highly toxic and a full plant investigation is under way. Turner’s body sent to Findley mortuary. Lyman’s burial set for Ridgelawn with services at Taylor Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Arthur Williams. Burial in Ridgelawn cemetery. He is survived by a brother Lee and two sisters Mae Lyman and Mrs. David Waterman.

County commissioners appointed Floyd L. Wooldridge to Lorain County Welfare Director succeeding Floyd L. Shaw who retires April 30. Wooldridge, 29, of Cambridge Avenue, was certified eligible by the Ohio Civil Service Commission, third on the list, after George Lawrence declined. Lawrence recommended Wooldridge. Shaw also supported him. A second certified candidate was Clifford Waterhouse, Elyria schoolteacher, whose position on the list drew support from Commissioner Dunn but he favored following the certification order.

First Christian Church Plans a $100 000 Drive
Members of the First Christian church voted to launch a $100,000 campaign to fund the completion of the proposed building on the Washing ton avenue property. Rev Henry K Shaw reported that preliminary surveys are done and bids are expected soon with Laurence Eddy directing the drive for about six weeks.

Third Bird Walk Draws Enthusiasts In Rainy Morning
A small group joined James Aker for the Cleveland Museum of Natural History on a third bird walk in cold rain. Birds observed included red-shouldered hawk, wood ducks, Louisiana waterthrush, golden crowned and ruby crowned kinglets, purple finch, myrtle warbler, goldfinch, and brown thrasher. The next walk is scheduled for May 17 at 7:18 am, meeting at Ely Woods Park Entrance on Washington Avenue.

Baby 13 Months Old Drinks Kerosene
A 13 month old, Sandra Kay Brown, daughter of Mr and Mrs Gordon Brown of Route 57 two miles north of Graf ton, drank kerosene from a tan can placed under a stove. She is in Elvira Memorial hospital in fair condition. The father told deputies he did not know how much kerosene remained in the can after a faulty connection caused seepage.

Leon Taylor of 381 West Street arrested on a charge of attempted murder after attacking Donald Miller at Miller’s station 917 Lake Avenue with a pocket knife at 7 15 p m Saturday.
