Contempt Citations Ordered for Browder and Field
Senate subcommittee chairman Mil lard E. Tydings moved to cite Earl Browder and Frederick Vanderbilt Field for defying subpoenas. He said the refusals to answer questions undermine Senate dignity, with possible fines and jail if convicted. The inquiry also probes McCarthy charges of Communist influence in the State Department and Lattimore as a Soviet spy, linking to the Amerasia case and a broader conspiracy claim. Budenz said he would reveal who engineered the theft of documents, naming a key conspiratorial Communist.

Air Supremacy Seen Needed For Airlift In War
Senator Hoyt S. Vandenberg, air chief of staff, said overwhelming air superiority would be required to operate an airlift in war. He warned that even a few enemy fighters could cause tremendous damage to transport streams. The Swarmmer exercise tested the degree of air superiority needed to support a Berlin-type airlift with six to one friendly air advantage. Weather limited aggressor flights, but observers watched two mass parachute jumps and the seizure of an abandoned air field as a simulated Berlin airlift began from Greenville and Laurinburg Maxton bases into the new airhead at Camp Mackall.
