Calley jury split over first My Lai murder count

In the sixth day of deliberations at Fort Benning AP reports jurors are sharply divided over the first of four murder counts against Lt. William Calley Jr. The panel plans an all day rerun of prosecution testimony as they weigh whether he ordered the killings of 30 to 40 civilians at a trail intersection. A key witness, Paul David Meadle, testified that Calley urged him to help shoot the victims after berating him for not taking care of the group.

United States jets strike North Vietnam again in heavy raids

U S jets mounted heavy raids on North Vietnam for a second straight day as South Vietnamese forces retreat from Laos under heavy attack. Saigon reports 12 000 government troops remaining in Laos and claims 12 000 Hanoi troops killed in a six week drive to sever the Ho Chi Minh trail. Casualties listed total 5 325 on the South Vietnamese side and 12 000 on the Hanoi side, while field reports note battles near Highway 9 with 52 South Vietnamese killed and 80 wounded.
