Elyria faces a downtown decline as Broad Street shows vacant stores and boarded windows. Land and building values plummet from the 1950s peak, while the one active block on the north side struggles amid rising “For Sale or Rent” signs.
Communist commandos attacked Khe Sanh base near Laos, killing eight U.S. soldiers and wounding 29. The raid destroyed two helicopters and left 13 wounded, with 20 sapper attackers killed among about 40. Saigon and U.S. units repelled the intrusion amid ongoing Laos withdrawal.
Four defendants in the Pandora raid pleaded guilty to drug offenses before Lorain County Common Pleas Judge Paul J. Mikus. Charles Ritter and Robert Drake admitted possession and sale of hallucinogens, Gerardo Vidal pleaded guilty to possession, Jose Nieves to a misdemeanor possession offense with fines, and one defendant, David Camp, was dismissed after a polygraph. The court scheduled pre sentence reports for the three with more serious charges and suspended Camp’s case. The report notes all five faced related charges later noted by the assistant prosecutor.

FDA ordered the recall of a contaminated Abbott Laboratories intravenous solution tied to septicemia 350 cases across 21 hospitals with nine deaths. Hospitals must replace the product within one week using other brands, with Abbott cooperating on an orderly withdrawal. Federal officials warned hospitals and urged strict handling precautions during restocking.
Elyria police charged Kenneth Hicks Richard Bennett and William Moore with possession of narcotics and Lester Lapp and James Linder with narcotics instruments after raids on a Middle Avenue residence and an Oakwood Street apartment. All five faced arraignment in Elyria Municipal Court as of late today.

Lorain County voters face a deadline to register at the elections offices on Cedar Street in Elyria and Broadway in Lorain before the May 4 primary. Lila Black says those who changed names must re register and residents who did not vote in the past two years must re register. About 10,000 registrations were cancelled for failure to return reinstatement cards, with hours remaining dwindling.
