In a seven day drift 26 crew members rode life rafts and 14 remained aboard to fight the fire as the U S S Elder was consumed by an engine room blaze near Eniwetok. All 40 rescued report no injuries while awaiting towing and return to Pearl Harbor. The incident occurred during preparations for spring atomic tests in the Marshall Islands.
Twenty six Navy men aboard the net tender Elder drifted seven days on life rafts after an engine room fire and failed signals. They sighted a vessel later identified as General Brewster but were not seen until Navy search planes found them and the Comstock rescued them. The men endured sun glare and sharks while awaiting rescue, then requested hot soup and fresh water.
Claude P. Dennison, who retired from the New York Central Railroad, was honored this week at the Elyria Labor Temple. Friends in labor groups and the railroad employes presented gifts, including a gold emblem of retired employees and a service certificate, in recognition of his 33 years with the company. Dennison, who lives at 220 Howe Street, retired February 15 due to illness.
The clerk of courts announced 15 names to begin common pleas court jury service on March 20. PARIS The Council of the Republic approved the American arms aid program 292 to 20, sending it toward final enactment after President Vincent Auriol ratifies. The Assembly earlier backed the measure despite Communist opposition. In Columbus Ohio James F Lin of Lincoln Electric spoke to graduates predicting major progress in the next 50 years.

Police investigated two burglaries at the Pioneer Crutch and Cane Company plant in Willoughby Ohio. Thirteen pairs of crutches were taken over the past two months, leaving investigators puzzled about the motive and culprits.
A new Catholic church and elementary school costing about 200 000 will be built beside St. Jude's rectory on Poplar street starting April 9. The project replaces the current church at Cleveland street and Abbe road. Rector Rev John A Carrabine said plans are approved and bids expected soon. The 176 by 171 foot building will have six classrooms a kitchen social room and seating for 528. Architects Kraus and Helm kamp of Akron.

Nationalist forces landed at dawn and captured the coastal city of Sungmen in Chekiang province about 120 miles south of the Chusan Islands. Naval communique claims 2,500 Communists annihilated and the operation severs a 20 mile stretch. no air cover or counterattack details given.
Elyria High School rep Richard Larkin placed fourth among six in the Lake Erie League extemp contest at Western Reserve University. Shaker Heights winner was Ron Stillman. Cleveland Heights and Lakewood also high rated. Larkin to compete again March 25 in the senior division before a state Exchange Clubs meeting in Lorain.
FRANKFURT Germany Bru nette Yvette Madsen of Brooklyn was convicted today of murdering her Air Force husband and sentenced to 15 years in prison. The court rejected her insanity plea and found her guilty of murder for shooting Lt Andrew Madsen at their Frankfurt home on October 20. The three judges noted mental imbalance from German psychiatric testimony. Sentence to be served at Alderson W Virginia or other confinement as deemed fit. Defense plans appeal to the U S high commission appeals court at Nuernberg.
Local residents warned of counterfeit ten and twenty dollar bills circulating in Lorain. Four notes were recovered at banks. fakes are well produced with mismatched mint letters and serial prefixes. The heavier paper and off color helped detection. Eighteen bills circulated recently in Lorain.
The Navy plans to enlist 5,000 men next month and 7,000 men in April May and June. Earlier quotas were 2,000 in January and 3,000 in February.
Sixteen persons pled guilty before Judge D A Cook on indictments returned by the grand jury Wednesday. Twenty others entered pleas of innocent with cases to be assigned for trial before Judge Guy B Findley after April 10. George Hill, 38, of 113 North Street, also known as George Eskridge, was sentenced to an indeterminate term for burglary of an inhabited dwelling at night. The offense carries life imprisonment unless mercy is suggested. mercy was recommended, reducing the sentence from five to 30 years. Hill has a prior criminal record. He entered the home of Mary Taylor on March 10 and took $15 from Louisa Taylor. John Clay, 29, of Lorain, received an indeterminate term for breaking and entering the James Griffith place in Lorain on February 7. He is currently on probation for a similar offense in Cleveland. Herbert Eddington, Paul Vanderson, and William Volk of Elyria pled guilty to breaking and entering the Brunner property on March 8. Their cases were referred to Probation Officer Arthur Moos for investigation. Vinancio Colon of Lorain was indicted for carrying a concealed weapon.
Brussels reports Premier Gaston Eyskens and his cabinet resigned amid the dispute over King Leopold's return to the throne. The nine Catholic ministers favor the king, while Liberal ministers oppose. a 24 hour strike looms as Socialist and Communist leaders threaten a general strike if Parliament approves Leopold. Leopold had been barred since 1945 for surrendering the army to Germany and marrying a commoner.
In Columbus the Ohio Junior Chamber of Commerce hosts an all state Jaycee meeting. Petitions signed by about 100000 Ohioans support government economy as urged by the Hoover commission and will be sent to Washington along with similar petitions from other states.
Washington The Air Force announced it still believes there is no such thing as a flying saucer despite recent reports. A spokesman said officers were not impressed by latest flying disc accounts and denied covering up space ship experiments. The stance cites misinterpretation, mass hysteria, or hoaxes.
J Clay Deane, district supervisor in Akron, announced new Census crew leaders for Lorain County. Names include Wallace Akers Jr Elyria Louis Theodore Bromson Lorain John X Flaherty Lorain Robert W Fling Grafton Roger J McDonnell Elyria William Walters Elyria. He also said preparations for enumerating institutional populations are underway with cooperation from officials of hospitals and jails and staff training planned where arrangements exist.
Governor Frank Lausche will be principal speaker at the dedication of Ga Hanna’s new $480,000 elementary school in Columbus. Architect John Quincy Adams designed the building, which houses 20 classrooms a library an auditorium gymnasium and a dining room.

Elyria records its first traffic fatality of the year when 39 year old John B. Redman of Wayne street died in a collision on West avenue near Eighth street at 2 14 am. Driver of the car, 24 year old Joseph McKissack of 1707 Middle avenue, was held for the grand jury on an involuntary manslaughter charge with a $1000 bond. McKissack allegedly drove while under the influence. The crash involved a Madison taxi, injuring Redman’s wife Helen and several taxi passengers treated for injuries.
Senator John W. Bricker says every civil defense phase of atomic warfare should be publicly discussed to balance enlightenment and security. The Joint Atomic Energy Committee heard that the AEC outlined radiation detection and treatment efforts including a cheap Geiger counter, survival measures, emergency monitoring teams, and city construction studies.
