About 20 000 Cambodian demonstrators sack and burn the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese embassies in Phnom Penh amid protests over Vietnam war involvement. The crowd damages villas and embassy vehicles while staff flee. police report no injuries, three embassy workers and three demonstrators injured in scuffles.
Lorain County officials request another extension of the real estate tax deadline to April 14 with county treasurer J Grant Keyes and county auditor Joseph J Mitock applying to the State Board of Tax Appeals. Protests by subdivisions could trigger a hearing. a 1 percent daily penalty could hit fees if the extension is denied.
A Burlington Railroad freight train derailed on the outskirts of Aurora Nebraska scattering bombs over a wide area. Officials evacuated area residents and ordered schools closed for at least two days. Experts from ordnance plants in Lincoln and Grad Island were summoned.
The fourth annual Lorain County Soap Box Derby will be held July 26 announced by Derby Director Dennis McDaniels of the Amherst Jaycees. Local Chevrolet dealers provide materials and rule books. winners receive a trophy, $500 bond, and trip to Akron for All-American Derby.
A United Airlines Boeing 727 with 99 passengers and seven crew was hijacked near Pittsburgh, landed in Atlanta for refueling, then departed for Havana. The aircraft was commanded by Capt. P E Gallant and later logged a Havana arrival at 12 13 pm.
A car bomb that killed two men and a Cambridge courthouse explosion are linked to the arson and riot trial of black militant H Rap Brown. Brown's lawyers warned of more bombings while officials said the blasts connected to the trial and Brown remains missing.
Avon man Jack Wilhelm, cross country coach at Lernea County Community College, was struck by a hit and run driver while jogging along Schwartz Road. He lay in an icy ditch for minutes before a passerby found him and firefighters and medics transported him to St Joseph Hospital with a broken hip and possible internal injuries along with a possible pelvic fracture.
AVON LAKE The Allied Industrial Workers Local 425 presented proposals to Fruehauf Trailer Co. management to improve efficiency and competitiveness after a bargaining committee meeting. The union criticizes high supervision levels and calls for layoffs to match hourly employee numbers, noting five supervisors in inspection and nine for hourly staff, while maintenance also shows excess supervision. A new contract is due May 15.
The union urges that all parts and subassemblies be produced in the plant to reduce delays from subcontracting. A bulletin board in each department should show true efficiency on all jobs, and plant management must attend step meetings per contract. The manager of Industrial Relations, Thomas Saggan, met the planning committee today with union reps but offered no comment.
The report notes more than 300 U S pilots based in seven Thai bases fly missions over Laos and North Vietnam. They receive no combat pay or tax exemptions available to troops in Vietnam or Laos, though they face hostile fire and risk. The Pentagon cites danger as justification for pay.
