Medina Charged With Murder in My Lai Massacre Case

Army charged Capt. Ernest L. Medina and seven others in the My Lai killings. Medina faced four counts of murder on or about March 16 1963 plus two more murder counts, and one count of assault with a deadly weapon during interrogations. Also charged were Capt Eugene M. Kotouc S Sgt Kenneth L. Hodges Pvt Max D. Hutson S Sgt Esequier Torres and Lt William L. Calley, the latter tied to 102 deaths. If upheld, the case goes to a military grand jury and then courts martial.

Brown trial recessed amid car blast mystery near Bel Air Maryland

On the second day of H Rap Brown’s trial in Bel Air Maryland the court recessed as prosecutors and defense debated whether Brown’s body could be the unidentified man killed in the car explosion near Cambridge. Ralph Featherstone was identified as the other victim while investigators examined wreckage and considered the possibility the blast was intended to kill Brown. Authorities reported a 1964 car split apart by the blast with pieces scattered along the highway 25 miles from Baltimore. Governor Mandel mobilized a National Guard unit and state police in alert status.

U.S. Jets Raid Laos in Broad Daily Loss Report Policy

Scores of American jets bombed Laos again with most raids by Navy aircraft from Gulf of Tonkin carriers and Air Force planes from Thailand. The U.S. command said it will report aircraft losses and airmen shot down in Laos daily, a change ordered by Defense Secretary Laird and President Nixon. In South Vietnam, two helicopters were shot down, five Americans killed, five wounded, and Da Nang saw a Marine helicopter crash from a rotor power failure. Guerrilla fire hit 10 Allied installations, with 7,000 Marines to be withdrawn to California as part of Nixon's phase three pullout.

Italy to close Rhodesia consulate in Salisbury

Italy announced its consulate general in Salisbury will close in response to the U.N. Security Council call for nonrecognition of Rhodesia. The Rome move followed Rhodesia's cabinet meeting on the closure of the U.S. Consulate. A British Foreign Office spokesman welcomed Italy's action.

US envoy summoned over Salisbury consulate closure

US Ambassador Walter Annenberg was summoned to the Foreign Office and handed a stern note. Guardian editorial praised the US decision to close its Salisbury consulate, citing decency over expediency and critiquing commercial interests. Telegraph predicts most remaining missions in Salisbury will withdraw except a few.

City Earned Pay Raise Split Dispute Drags On

Two Elyria city employee groups accuse the city of not paying the final portion of last year’s 15 percent plus 5 percent pay raise.
