City tax abatements under review by school officials
Ohio House Education Committee advanced a bill requiring property tax abatements to be reviewed by school administrators before local governments grant them. The measure, sponsored by Rep. John Bara, would notify superintendents within 24 hours and give 48 hours for review, with schools allowed to negotiate revenue sharing on expansions or relocations. Amendments would permit lawsuits against noncompliant companies and create tax councils including school district representatives to vet abatement proposals.
