Councilman pushes Elyria police audit plan amid resistance

Elyria councilman Mark Craig proposed an independent audit of the Police Department during a Finance Committee meeting but faced opposition led by Police Chief Duane Whitely. Whitely argued the department is highly efficient and questioned the need for an audit, noting past Fire Department overspending prompted that review. Craig cited a 2009 Fire Department audit as a potential blueprint and the 1979 police management study as outdated, saying the move would provide objective tools rather than constrain the force.
