Rebuilt Into Apartments 75-Year-Old Church Is Converted To New Use

A 75-year-old Huntington Universalist Church at New London Eastern and Baker roads is being converted into an apartment house this July. Retired member Minert Laburie recalls the days when horse drawn buggies filled the church, now Balkanidows sold pews and chairs, moved the pulpit, and redesigned the interior for living spaces while retaining the organ for his daughter's lessons. The two men with ties to the church diverge in view yet share a common aim as the building transitions from spiritual gatherings to multi-family living, erasing most traces of its original life. The remaining living congregants include Mr. and Mrs. Henry Laughery, Mrs. Leipha Rowland, and Hyram Cole.
