Reasonable ranges for P E ratios in stocks
Readers ask about sensible P E ranges for shares. Historically the Dow Jones average moved from highs near 19x to lows around 10x in the 1950s and 1960s as earnings and market sentiment shifted. Current P E levels vary by industry and growth, with 25x often too high for many steady issues yet acceptable for rapid growth, while 15x may be standard for mature sectors. Investors should compare with historical ranges for the specific issue and with peers, noting that earnings estimates are uncertain and market expectations can preemptively adjust multiples. Strong growth stocks like Avon at 50x and Kresge at 44x illustrate premium valuation, whereas a 17.5x DJIA multiple might seem high in retrospect.
