Lorain reports Willie Chavis, 47, of Elyria, says he battled flames and searched the burning hull after smoke poured into the engine room of the Roger Blough. Len Moore Jr. and Clyde Burdue are missing and presumed dead, while John Alexander escaped. Herbert Morrow, another crew member, describes yelling to missing men as smoke engulfed the tank area. Both Morrow and Chavis were treated for smoke inhalation. Chavis remains weak as the investigation continues.

Dr. Thomas Showalter, 39, will become superintendent of Elyria public schools on Aug 1, replacing Dr. George B. Smittle. He comes from Girard with 2,600 students, to lead a district of 12,363. Salary 25750. He was chosen from over 50 applicants and will face finance challenges.
