Ohio Senate approves phased auto license plan for 1979

The Ohio Senate backed a plan to stagger motor vehicle registration over 12 months beginning January 1979. Auto tags issued in April and May will have varying valid lengths, with the bill returning to the House for minor changes before Governor Rhodes. The proposal, aided by bipartisan support and driven by a Chronicle Telegram investigation, also introduces a mail purchase option for tags at $1.50 extra.

Plane crashes into Cleveland homes killing occupants

A private light plane struck a residential area near East 120th Street and Sellers Avenue in Cleveland igniting four houses. Fire officials indicated there were casualties and suggested there were likely no survivors aboard the aircraft, with witnesses recalling a nonspinning, low-flying two engine Cessna. Residents described escaping as flames spread.

Mall fireworks set for July 3 in Elyria

The Elyria Jaycees and Midway Mall announce July 3 as the Independence Day fireworks date with a rain plan for July 4. If Sunday rain cancels, the display moves to Monday July 4. A downtown parade will follow on July 4, led by the Lorain County Historical Society.

Lawson 24 Hour Stores Expand In Greater Cleveland Area

Lawson Milk Co reports about 60 percent of Greater Cleveland stores have shifted from midnight to 10 pm to 24 hour service with the rest to follow within two months. Open locations include East Broad St, Hilliard Rd, Lake and Griswold, Woodland Ave in Elyria and two North Ridgeville sites. Clerks say overnight hours attract fishermen and late shoppers, while others fear robberies. A Lawson’s official downplays robbery risk and expects no surge in incidents.

Explosions Blast Akron Streets After Naptha Dump

A strikebound rubber plant dumped 3,000 gallons of volatile naptha into Akron sewers. Explosions damaged streets and crypts at Glendale Cemetery, broke water and gas mains, and caused evacuations on the west side with authorities calling the incident major damage. No injuries reported.
