Quinlan Near Death After Prolonged Coma

Nixon Aide Mitchell Goes to Prison in Alabama Camp

Former U S attorney general John Mitchell, 63, enters Maxwell AFB prison camp in Alabama, as H R Haldeman, 50, surrenders and Ehrlichman serves time in Arizona. All three Nixon aides were sentenced to 40 months to eight years for conspiracy and perjury. Parole possible next year. Mitchell in dorm with 43 others in a low security setting.

Bridge Plan Reappears for Plum Creek Crossing

Olmsted Falls officials clash with County Engineer Ronald Stackhouse over replacing the aging Plum Creek Bridge with a four lane span and widening Bagley Road. Mayor Mills says previous engineer Albert Porter fought the widening, and Stackhouse will demolish the bridge only if council passes a consent ordinance to build a four lane structure. Fourth of July celebration shifts to Midway Mall grounds

Elyria Jaycees and Lorain County Historical Society plan a July 4 program at Midway Mall to memorialize the day. An estimated 21 000 spectators are expected for a pyrotechnic show offset by police support and mall cooperation. The event will feature a band and a student choir with a parade planned by the Lorain County Four-H Band and other school groups. Donations for fireworks total about half of the $2500 goal.

City and schools approve 50 50 split of federal public works funds

Elyria Board of Education and city officials agreed to share 817000 in federal public works money evenly. School funds will renovate Elyria High School while the city uses its half for a water line to the Lorain County Jail and a sewer line to Barshaw Chemical Co. Both parties will resubmit projects for later funding.

Lorain County stalls on U S funds use split over jail or arts center

Lorain County commissioners and Lorain County Community College trustees failed to agree on 965700 in EDA funds. Commissioners favor jail construction while the college seeks a 457000 grant for a fine arts building. Both aims may proceed within the EDA 90 day rule as discussions continue.

U.S. fears worse winter gas shortage

The Federal Power Commission staff projects interstate pipelines will have 169.9 billion cubic feet less gas for delivery in the 1977 78 heating season than last year. Officials warn shortages could be worse in winter even with normal weather.

Construction starts in 45 days for two elderly high rises

Two five story elderly housing high rises will begin in 45 days in Elyria and Lorain. The project, a multi million dollar effort, aims for completion within a year under a 30 year loan through Women's Federal Savings Loan Association in Cleveland. Kent Consolidated Developers will build. units may be reduced from five to four stories to meet federal requirements.

Retired C-T writer dies at 63

Embree Hoss Hoffman, 63, longtime Chronicle-Telegram reporter, died yesterday at Elyria Memorial Hospital after an illness of a year and a half. Mrs. Hoffman won more than 40 awards to her name and 4 ball years on the C-T staff. Story on Page E-2.
