In New York the Democratic National Convention crowd weighs McAdoo’s delegate lead against Smith’s organized drive and a rising anti Klan plank. Dark horse hopefuls Davis Underwood Ralston rally as possible compromise, while tensions flare over coverage and insider attacks.
Chicago reports six deaths and numerous injuries as violent storms with electrical disturbances sweep the Midwest from the Dakotas to Minnesota. Three killed in Chicago including two from lightning and a man struck while closing a window. a caddy slain by a lightning tree. fire captain Timothy Murphy struck by a bolt. A tornado near Tracy, Minnesota killed three and wounded twenty. Crops power lines communications and buildings suffered heavy losses across the storm path.
State Senator J. F. Burke Elyria a Republican gubernatorial candidate recommends that Republican candidates for state offices be permitted to form the Ohio GOP platform. His recommendation is in a letter to the resolutions committee of the Republican State Platform convention meeting in Columbus on Tuesday.
Walter Grymkowski, 35, and Martin Mattlowski, 33, both from Carbon County, were executed in the state penitentiary for a single murder. The men died within minutes of each other as the electric chair carried out their sentences.
William F P Penfound dies at home on Chestnut Ridge at 12 45 yesterday aged 88 1 2. Survived by seven children J H Penfound Carlisle Miss Selina at home Mrs Laura Wade Oberlin William T Carlisle Harry and Mrs Emily Beck Carlisle and Mrs Anna Cox Elgin. Immigrated from England to Carlisle township in 1882 and was a retired farmer. Funeral Wednesday at 1 30 p m from the Chestnut Ridge home Rev E B Redhead officiating burial in LaPorte cemetery.
A rumor claims Sheriff Underhill dismissed deputies Frank Klady Karl Dern and R J Croyle who hunted violations of the prohibition laws. Underhill declined to confirm or deny. In Columbus Gov Donahey faced protest demands urging action by July 1 on charges of malfeasance in Frangia County sheriff Frank L Holycross.
Florence Gardiner Farley of Kansas is the youngest national committeewoman at the Democratic national convention in New York. She is serving a second term in the position. Mr. and Mrs. Lea Roy Springs, South Carolina delegates at large, have equal rights in the convention. Among visitors who traveled the longest distance were Isadore B. Dockweiler of Angelo Cal. and Dr. J. W. Morrow of Portland, Ore., national committeemen.
New York dispatch notes delegates at a party convention rising early while some senators sleep. Michigan backs Ferris. Alva Cummings designated delegate at large. McAdoo and Smith vie for Massachusetts votes as others pledge for Governor Ritchie, Sweet, Bryan, and Walsh. Georgia’s 79 year old Jim the Democrat, meets Mayor Hylan amid the parade.
Reports from west of the city detail high wind damage Friday night. West, South and Murray ridges saw torn Baradoura, overturned outbuildings, and a barn blown down on the Morgan farm. The storm was the worst in years. In Columbus, Judge Harry L. Conn of Van Wert began his Ohio Supreme Court duties.
A state police investigation in Laghnorn Pennsylvania centers on the deaths of Mr and Mrs Jonathan Gillman and their son Clarence at their Woodside farm. Authorities believe the son killed his parents then killed himself with a single barrel shotgun after objects and a partially laid breakfast indicated a staged scene. Friends said mental trouble tied to crop worries had been warned by doctors regarding the son.
Claude Spicer receives word from Coraopolis Pa of the death of his father Dr C A Spicer aged 69 from heart trouble. He was a former Wellington physician and is survived by his wife and son Claude. Funeral services will be held at the Wadsworth funeral parlors in Wellington Wednesday afternoon. The police report a box car burglary with two cartons of cigarettes stolen, blamed on trampe or boys.
Walter Watts, Elyria court stenographer for thirty years, passed the bar exam after the Lorain County Bar Association backed his candidacy. He plans no office yet but will seek admission to practice. Also noted are reports of Lieut. Maughan’s across the continent flight, delays at McCook Field, and storm-spotty progress from Rosecrans to St Joseph with weather and mechanical notes.
A Sunday crash two miles from Grafton near Helden at 420 p.m. involved a car driven by William Schultz of Amherst being run off the road into a ditch. Mrs. Schultz suffered a minor cut above the right eye.
Two Cleveland women, Mrs Norman Ebert and Mrs J R Mahr, were struck on Ridgeville road by a car driven by Arthur Klotz after stopping to view a prior accident. Both were lightly injured and taken to Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Fanny May of Oberlin filed a divorce suit against Harry May alleging gross neglect of duty. She cites failure to provide and states she had to work to support herself. She seeks restoration to her maiden name Fannie D Arnold and other relief as the court grants. Attended Dwarfs Rites. F Waldron attended funeral of Creston dwarf Charles Countes noted for learning and long Creston residence.
