The Vietnam war becomes the longest U S conflict as thousands of troops reposition to defend Saigon against a feared third offensive. U S forces halt infiltration routes near the capital while paratroopers kill 85 enemies northwest of Saigon and B 52 strikes target suspected staging areas.
Washington AP reports Resurrection City’s permit expires tomorrow at 8 p.m. Federal officials oppose extensions. Rev Ralph David Abernathy vows not to leave, resigning Atlanta pastorate to focus on the campaign. Volunteers from around the country sought as clashes and arrests continue.
Nine Elyria youths and one Lorain youth were arrested after two fights. Six juveniles were sent to Lorain County Jail, four held in Oberlin Jail with bonds set. Names include Clenophtus Bowens and Willie Lee Cole, with charges ranging from carrying concealed weapons to assault and battery.
An eight year old Lorain boy, Paul Ondeka, was struck by a car driven by Alfonso Rodriguez and died at St. Joseph Hospital. He rode north on Toledo Avenue toward East 28th Street when the westbound car hit him. Police say the driver’s charges have not yet been filed.
Elyria attorney Jack W. Dilgren faces questions on his eligibility for Lorain County Common Pleas Court in the November election. He plans no action until he obtains an official ruling copy. The Ohio Supreme Court deemed a constitutional amendment barring judges over 70 from seeking election in effect, effective immediately. Incumbent judges nearing 70 argue the measure impacts this year’s race.

In Rio de Janeiro about 2000 Brazilian students demonstrated for more education funding and attacked the U S Embassy. Police fired on protesters, killing at least three people including a bystander and a police officer. 278 injured and 400 arrested as rioters spread through downtown. No Americans harmed.
